It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since the co-op opened its doors. That’s right, we’re celebrating our 10 year anniversary this month! Come celebrate with us Sunday, May 19 from 2-5 PM at Oz Farm for a potluck, wine and cider tasting, drawing with prizes, and more!

Co-op Principle #3: Member Economic Participation

The third cooperative principle relates to how members participate in the economic operation of Arena Market and Cafe. First, we welcome members and second, members elect the Board of Directors, which sets the financial policies of the co-op and how your money is used.

Membership equity provides capital funds (money that lasts for a long time) for remodeling the building, upgrading our equipment, and ensuring we have the inventory of products that people buy. Our members pay $50 initially then $50 annually to stay current until they reach the full-share limit of $300. We now have 708 members, including 242 full-share members, all of whom have paid in over $120,000 in membership equity raised this way.

Members also patronize the co-op. Shopping for groceries, even cups of coffee, as a member supports the operation, pays for the wages of more than 20 employees, and keeps the co-op in business. About half of our store sales are to members (those people who tell the cashier their member number.)

When the co-op needed funds for big changes, such as our initial building improvements, we accepted both shareholder investments and shareholder loans. By law, we are limited to a select few people who satisfy a set of criteria to ensure that they know the risks. Nonetheless, we succeeded in raising about $180,000 this way in our first couple of years to get us started. Most of those members want to remain anonymous, but they were crucial to making the co-op happen.

Finally, members have paid into their house charge accounts, what we call pay-it-forward or prepaid store-credit. Because of the seasonal nature of our store sales (winter doldrums followed by big summer and fall seasons), members paying early and buying late helps with our cash flow. Some members do this routinely, others respond to requests for items like the new store sign, oven, or espresso machine. The cashier will help you make such payments any time you ask.

Membership has its rewards. Our co-op gives members a 5% discount off all items in the market and cafe, and an extra 5% on the first Friday member-appreciation day. Co-op members can join our Propane Buyers Club for discounted fuel in collaboration with Suburban Propane. Members also get the satisfaction of participating in a democratic business that supports our local, sustainable food economy.

Thanks to a vibrant community of co-op members in the Point Arena area, we continue to respond to challenging economic times. When we talk with other co-ops about the size of our membership and the amount of equity our members contributed, the reaction is envy and pleasure that the cooperative spirit drives Arena Market and Cafe so well.

Supplier Spotlight: Little Green Bean

Did you know that Arena Market and Cafe is the ONLY place on the coast where you can get Little Green Bean espresso made just for you? Well you can! It’s another exclusive supplier special featured only at  the co-op.
The name Little Green Bean not only stands for the state of the bean before it’s roasted, but also for the sustainable approach it has to coffee. Little Green Bean is completely organic, sources all the beans using Fair Trade, and supports small farms around the world. All of the packaging is biodegradable, and the co-op is the only place to get Little Green Bean Coffee from the bulk bins, so you can even just bring a refillable container! 
Tom Neth, creator of Little Bean Green Coffee, began selling his locally roasted, organic, and Fair Trade beans to the Arena Market and Cafe around seven years ago, which was just about the time he started his business. “The more I learned, the more I began bartering,” Tom said, “which then developed into a business.” 

Eventually the passion he had for learning to roast, along with his enjoyment of a hot fresh cup, led him to a roasting seminar with Diedrich Manufacturing in Idaho. Tom chose The Series IR Diedrich roaster because it aligned with his similar environmental principles and connected him with a network of other sustainable coffee lovers alike. In addition:
Diedrich Manufacturing has always been committed to our environment; this is not a new politically correct position for us as it is now to others "jumping on this bandwagon." We started this with our use of infrared burners which are 50-60% more energy efficient and cleaner burning than any other burner on the market! These have always been low NOX, CO and CO2.
The green beans are roasted to various degrees offering a selection of variety and flavor. Tom does small batch roasts around three or four times a week for ultimate freshness; each batch taking an average of 16 minutes. He says for a small business owner he can “mentally only do about 10 roasts a day.”
Little Green Bean is now sold in 15 different locations from Fort Bragg to Gualala. The co-op is proud to offer it to our community as a long-standing supporter of unique, local, sustainable suppliers.

Celebrate Our Tenth Anniversary!

Arena Market and Café opened for business in the spring of 2009. We’re celebrating our tenth anniversary at Oz Farm on Sunday, May 19, 2019, from 2-5 pm, and we hope to see you there!
The party will feature potluck food, snacks from the co-op, wine tasting, and Oz Farm cider. Vegan and vegetarian options will be available. Music will be provided by KTDE’s Hollerin’ Pines DJ, The Sparrow. And there will be some wonderful raffle prizes!

Creamy Vanilla Chia Seed Pudding ~ No Dairy

  • 1 1/2 cups non-dairy milk
  • 1/2 cup chia seeds
  • 1-2 Tbsp maple syrup (more or less to taste)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract



To a mixing bowl add dairy free milk, chia seeds, maple syrup, and vanilla.  Whisk to combine.  Cover and refrigerate overnight (or at least 6 hours). The chia pudding should be thick and creamy. 

Enjoy as is, or layer with compote or fresh fruit! Will keep covered in the refrigerator up to 5 days.


Third Thursday Poetry Brings Ukiah Poet Armand Brindt to the Co-op

On Thursday, May 16, at 7:30pm the Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz Reading Series will feature Ukiah poet Armand Brindt. The reading will take place at the Arena Market and Cafe with live improv jazz and an open mic.

Armand Brint received his Master's in Creative Writing and English from San Francisco State University and has taught creative writing at Bay Area colleges and Mendocino College. 

He's been published in many literary journals and is the author of four volumes of poetry: Schools of Light, The League of Slow Cities, In the Name of Wonder, and the soon-to-be-released Aliens of the Midway. Armand is also the author of a book on writing poetry, Bringing Poems to Life: 16 Keys to Make Your Poems Sing.

Amand was the City of Ukiah's first Poet Laureate and served on the Poet Laureate Committee for a total of seven years. He is the recipient of several poetry awards, including a Jane Reichhold International Haiku Prize. Armand is a founding member of the Ukiahaiku Festival, now in its 17th year.

Armand is a popular reader in Mendocino County and recently has been teaching poetry at the summer Emandal Farm ArtStay Program.

Here’s what Mendocino Coast poet Devreaux Baker says about Armand’s poetry: "Armand Brint’s poems are soulful incantations to the sorrows and joys inherent in human relationships. Funny and humane, fueled by the poet’s elegant imagination, they take us on a journey both meditative and down to earth.”

Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz is supported by The Third Thursday Poetry Group, many anonymous donors, and Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has received from The James Irvine Foundation.
