Our Co-op on the Coast

Arena Market and Cafe / Coastal Organics Cooperative

A Message from Your General Manager

Happy New Year! Looking forward to an interesting year on all fronts. Last year was a challenging one, with significant repairs to a compressor unit causing almost 2 weeks of downtime for our refrigerated produce case. We had a few staff changes, which always keeps things interesting. We still going, though, and stoked about it!
We have some new art installments in the cafe. Myra McNamara’s MLK collage display, and our own Lester Dagradi will have paintings up at the beginning of February!
On the food front, a slew of interesting new things have been coming into the store in the last few weeks! Look for some new cheeses, a 13-bean soup mix in the bulk section, and JustTea brand teas in new convenient tea sachets. We’ll have a sample pot out on the First Friday of February. Our vegan options are ever growing and changing. Looking for meatless options? We carry a variety of tofu and seitan, vegan meat products, and or course the best organic produce on the coast!
Did you know your co-op has a Facebook page? If you didn’t, you do now! Give us a like, and you’ll get notified when we have new stuff, sales, or events to be aware of. I’m in the store most weekdays (and often enough on weekends) and I always welcome feedback. If you want to let us know how we’re doing, what you’d like us to stock, or have anything else you’d like us to know, we have a suggestion box in the alcove near the restroom, which I personally check daily. Please use it! It helps us keep up with your wants and needs!
See you soon,
Mike Sakellaridis, General Manager

Some Thoughts from the Coop President

After the enthusiastic annual meeting in September, the co-op Board of Directors has been focused on planning for 2017. Budgets, policies, and supporting our employees are priorities going forward.
We have one vacancy on the Board after the resignation of Natalie Cortese due to work obligations. Sorry to have lost someone who works at the co-op and has a passion for our role in the community. We will be talking with members seeking someone interested in growing the co-op.
Several issues with our store building and refrigeration equipment have been constant reminders of the weather challenges along the coast. Thanks to cooperation from our landlord, the Oddfellows, our General Manager, Mike, will be fixing some of the most urgent items.
A personal objective of mine for 2017 will be to champion the 7 Cooperative Principles that govern the operation of cooperatives around the world. Two principles will be early priorities, #5, Education, Training and Information, and #7, Concern for Community. Because we have over 500 members in the community, with many of you supporting us since our beginnings in 2008, the co-op will use these newsletters to keep you informed and engaged in a vital community asset.

Hello coop members my name is Ginny Wyatt. I am a relatively new Board Member and I would like to reinstate our newsletter. I believe communication is important to the well functioning of all things. That said I encourage all members to participate in our coop by communicating your needs wants and desires. We are so fortunate that our coop is here providing for us everyday with a great group of individuals that show up and make it happen daily.

There are several ways to be heard suggestion box, speak to an employee, manager or a board member. If you do not shop at the coop presently I would like to know why. What can the coop do to meet your grocery needs? If you share with me I will do my best to meet your needs if at all possible. The consistency of our shoppers is what keeps the store stocked full and abundant. Every member matters. We plan for a monthly newsletter with reports from board, manager and employees. We will highlight new and sale items. Please let me know if you have any other ideas or would like to be a part of the newsletter creation. I welcome any and all members that would like to participate. Thank you for reading and caring about your coop.
