Progress with Standby Generator Project

Hidden behind the fence, our stand-by generator sits in its delivery crate while we prepare the installation site. Dan Lewis, co-op board member, coordinated the delivery by FedEx Freight, forklift operations by Chris Hutcheson, propane tank selection with Suburban Propane, and concrete pad construction with Rick Beach and Michael Jeremiah, all after approval from our landlord, the Odd Fellows.

Next steps will involve mounting the generator on the pad, taking delivery of a 500-gallon propane tank, and installing propane and electrical connections.

Our campaign has raised about 70% of the $18,000 budget to install the generator. So far, we have two 0% interest loans, substantial payments into member house-charge accounts, and donations and contributions to our GoFundMe campaign: https://www.gofundme.com/f/coastal-organics-cooperative-up-generator-fund.

The community’s generous spirit created and has supported the co-op over the past 10 years. The new generator will enable us to provide the community with these services (and more) whenever the electricity goes out:

  • a safe, warm, well-lighted place serving hot food, coffee, and drinks
  • fresh filtered water if your well pump is out
  • ice
  • your regular groceries and emergency supplies
  • electricity to charge your cell phones, tablets, and laptops

Co-op Fundraising Successes

After reading about our recent campaign to raise funds for a stand-by generator, a thoughtful co-op member asked whether our past fundraising campaigns for other purposes had been successful and raised enough money. 

The answer is yes.

We are very grateful for the support of co-op members who responded to support the co-op when we needed financial help.

Our first campaign was in fall 2013 when the co-op sought funds for a cash-flow reserve heading into the winter doldrums of 2014. The President of the Board at the time, Curtis Weinrich, raised $10,000 in 24 hours!

During the past two years, similar campaigns successfully raised funds to replace our stove/oven, then our café refrigerator, and, recently, to upgrade our credit-card machines. Each of those campaigns helped our staff do their jobs better and serve our loyal co-op members more effectively.

Co-op members have contributed financially in various ways. Some paid into their house-charge accounts. Some gave us donations. Others gave us low-interest shareholder loans. Some paid to bring their member equity to full-share status.

February Employee Spotlight:
Meet Rosario Santillan! 


For roughly seven years, the co-op has been lucky to have Rosario’s sunny, dependable smile and laughter brightening the premises. On her off days, you can find Rosario watching the sunset at the pier, eating a turkey-pesto sandwich from the co-op accompanied by an ice-cold Pacifico, and humming along to "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran.

Hailing from Hesperia CA, she's been living in Point Arena for more than 20 years and has four children and four beautiful grandsons. Among her favorite memories at the co-op are the staff dressing up for Halloween (she was a bumble bee one year). Whatever costume Rosario chooses this year, if she makes your coffee or checks you out at the register, you can count on a transaction with a full measure of good cheer.  
 


Welcome New Board Member James Gallager

We are pleased to announce that James Gallager has joined the co-op board and filled our vacant seat. James is the farm manager at Oz Farm and has a passion for providing local, organic food to our community. We look forward to working with him in this capacity!

 


Jamaican Curry

Gluten Free, Vegan
(Created by Gaz Oakley from Avant-Garde Vegan)
Serves 4; 15 minute cook time; 3 out 10 difficulty.
  
Ingredients

  • 5 Spring Onions, chopped fine
  • 5 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 Scotch Bonnet, chopped small
  • 2 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 5 tsp Jamaican Curry Powder
  • 1 tsp Ground Ginger
  • 1 tbs Dried Thyme
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1 Red Pepper, cut small
  • Handful Tender stem Broccoli, chopped into 3
  • 5 Baby Zucchini, cut small
  • Handful Fine Beans, cut small
  • Handful Asparagus Tips
  • Handful Samphire (optional)
  • 1 can Chickpeas
  • 1 can Coconut Milk
  • 1 cup Water
  • 3 tbs Tomato Puree 
Preparation:
  1. Pre heat a large non stick pan or wok over a medium heat.
  2. Add a touch of oil followed by the onions, garlic, chilli & a pinch of salt & pepper. Sauté for a minute before adding the dried herbs and spices. 
  3. Cook the mix, stirring often for 4-5 minutes. 
  4. Add the pepper, courgette, fine beans, broccoli & asparagus.
  5. Cook for a few minutes before adding the chickpeas.
  6. Add the coconut milk, water & tomato puree.
  7. Allow the curry to bubble away for a few minutes to thicken up before adding the samphire. 

Once thickened, serve the curry with quinoa & coconut flakes.
 


Third Thursday Poetry Brings Emeryville Poet Sarah Kobrinsky to the Co-op



Former Poet Laureate of Emeryville, California, Sarah Margaret Ruth Kobrinsky will read at the Arena Market cafe on Thursday, February 20, at 7:30pm, part of the Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz Reading series.  The event will also feature live and open-mic improv jazz before and after the reading.

Nighttime on the Other Side of Everything (New Rivers Press, November 2019) is Sarah’s first collection of poetry.  Her poems and stories have appeared in Magma Poetry, Red Light Lit, Eleven Eleven, Monkeybicycle, *82 Review, 100 Word Story, and Fjords Review. She was recently long-listed for the 2019 University of Canberra Vice Chancellor's Poetry Prize. 
 
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Sarah was raised in Fargo, North Dakota. She attended Minnesota State University, Moorhead where she earned a degree in Anthropology. She has spent time in London, England and currently lives in the Bay Area with her husband and son.

In addition to writing poetry, Sarah has a handmade dinnerware company, Jered's Pottery, with her husband, and is a perinatal yoga instructor and semi-retired international folk dancer.  She has been a barista, flower delivery driver, executive assistant, life model, server, unemployment consultant, and greeting card writer. Sarah loves to binge-watch British detective shows.

Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz is supported by The Third Thursday Poetry Group, many anonymous donors, and Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has received from The James Irvine Foundation.
